About Heritage Media
A small studio that builds software for people doing real work.
Heritage Media builds web and mobile applications for schools, school districts, and small organisations. Nearly everything we make started the same way: someone described a job they were doing with a spreadsheet, a clipboard, and a great deal of patience, and it was obvious that software should have been doing it years ago.
What we work on
The bulk of our work is the Connect suite — student transportation registration, field trip dispatch, an in-cab driver tablet, fleet maintenance and driver scheduling, and the mapping and routing underneath all of it. Alongside that we build and maintain standalone products: personal finance, a children's reading tracker, and booking software for a small business.
How we work
We start with the job, not the feature list. That usually means sitting with the problem long enough to find out what people are actually doing, which is rarely what the official process says they do. The workaround someone invented is almost always the most useful thing in the room — it tells you exactly where the real system fails.
We are small on purpose. The person who writes the code is the person you talk to about it, and a change that obviously makes sense does not have to survive a product committee to get made.
We also expect to still be running this software in ten years, so we build on tools that will still be here: Laravel, Livewire, and MySQL on the web, Flutter on tablets, Esri ArcGIS for mapping, and our own self-hosted OSRM routing so that a routing bill never decides how carefully someone is allowed to plan.
Where a service does a job properly we use it rather than rebuild it — Twilio for messaging, Geotab for vehicle telemetry, Stripe and QuickBooks for taking and recording money, Plaid and SimpleFIN for bank feeds. What we do not do is hand over the part that makes the product work.
